DIY HOW TO MAKE PERFUME: EAU DE PARFUM
Welcome to Tutorial Tuesday! Today, we’re diving into the art of making Eau de Parfum—yes, the very “Perfume” you know and love. If you’ve already mastered perfume oil, you're ready for this next level in DIY fragrance-making. Eau de Parfum is the perfect blend of essential oils, alcohol, and a touch of water, delivering that lovely sprayable fragrance you’re used to.
Eau de Parfum vs. Perfume Oil
Eau de Parfum is what you typically find in stores, with an alcohol base instead of the jojoba carrier oil we used last time. It comes in those handy spray bottles you can stash in your bag for a fresh spritz on the go or use with an atomizer for a vintage touch.
Ready? Let’s get started!
If You’re New to Perfume-Making…
If you haven’t checked out the tutorial on perfume oil yet, give that a quick read through until you reach "The Maths" section. With that foundational knowledge, you’ll be set for today’s project.
Eau de Parfum Calculations
Good news—the math here is straightforward, especially with Google’s help. For this tutorial, we’re using a 10ml atomizer bottle, where each ml holds around 20 drops. That means:
10ml x 20 drops = 200 drops
Our Eau de Parfum will have 200 drops, broken down into:
- 20% essential oil (40 drops)
- 70% alcohol (140 drops)
- 10% distilled water (20 drops)
With a basic ratio of 2 parts base note: 1 part heart note: 1 part head note, you’ll need:
- 20 drops base note
- 10 drops heart note
- 10 drops head note
Easy, right?
Materials You’ll Need
- 10ml atomizer bottle (or a thoroughly cleaned perfume bottle)
- 3 essential oils or fragrance oils (choose skin-safe options for best results)
- 7ml of 190-proof alcohol (Everclear is ideal, but high-proof vodka works too; avoid rubbing alcohol!)
- 3 pipettes for the essential oils
- Measuring cup with ml units
- Small funnel
- Optional: 20 drops distilled water (omit if you prefer a clearer perfume)
- Tag or label for your finished perfume
Let’s Get Started!
- Prep Your Workspace: Clean your work surface and gather all your materials.
- Measure the Base Note: Using a pipette, add 20 drops of your chosen base note to the atomizer bottle.
- Add the Heart Note: Next, add 10 drops of your heart note.
- Add the Head Note: Finally, add 10 drops of your head note.
Do not shake yet!
- Blend and Wait: Seal the bottle and shake gently to blend. Store in a cool, dark place for one week, allowing the oils to “marry.”
Adding the Alcohol
After a week, if you’re happy with your blend, pour 7ml of alcohol into your measuring cup, then funnel it into the atomizer bottle with the essential oils. Seal, shake gently, and let it rest for another month.
Test and Fine-Tune
After the month, test your perfume. If the alcohol smell lingers, let it mature for another month or two—three months is often the sweet spot for Eau de Parfum.
You’re now the proud creator of your own Eau de Parfum! In the next Tutorial Tuesday, we’ll explore the world of solid perfume. Stay tuned!
